Nano Tip Hair Extensions: What Stylists Need to Know
Nano Tip extensions are an individual strand method designed to give stylists precise control over placement, density and the finished result.
Each extension is secured to the natural hair using a small Nano Ring, with no heat or adhesive required during installation. Because the attachment points are small and individual, Nano Tips can be strategically placed throughout the head and can offer greater flexibility when styling the hair up.
But like any extension method, Nano Tips aren't automatically the right choice for every client.
Who are Nano Tip extensions best suited for?
The method should always be chosen around the client, not simply because it's the method you prefer to install.
Before recommending Nano Tips, consider:
• Natural hair density and condition
• The client's desired length and volume
• How they normally wear their hair
• Gym, sport and activity levels
• How often they wear ponytails or their hair up
• Their ability to commit to maintenance and aftercare
• Whether the natural hair can safely support the individual extensions
Nano Tips can be particularly useful for clients who regularly wear their hair up or want more flexibility with styling because the individual attachment points allow for strategic placement.
For very fine or compromised hair, however, suitability should always be assessed carefully during consultation. Heat-free does not automatically mean suitable for every head of hair.
How much Nano Tip hair does your client need?
This is one of the most important parts of an extension consultation.
The amount of hair required depends on the client's natural density, starting length, haircut and desired finished result. There isn't one standard amount that works for everyone.
As a general guide:
Around 25g — highlights, filling gaps or adding targeted fullness.
25–50g — adding volume to finer hair without significantly increasing length.
Around 100g — a common starting point for fine hair requiring both length and volume.
More may be required — particularly when blending shorter or denser natural hair or creating a much fuller result.
If an extension result looks thin or doesn't blend correctly, the quality of the hair isn't necessarily the problem. Insufficient grams, placement, the client's existing haircut or an unrealistic consultation plan can all affect the finished result.
This is why we recommend deciding quantity during the consultation rather than automatically using the same number of packets on every client.
Are Nano Tips suitable for fine hair?
They can be.
The small attachment points allow stylists to work precisely and can make Nano Tips easier to conceal in appropriate areas of finer hair.
However, “fine hair” doesn't automatically mean “Nano Tips.”
Density, strength and condition still need to be assessed. In some cases, another method — or even a combination of extension methods — may create a better result.
There is no single best extension method.
There is a best method for the individual client.
Nano Tips vs other extension methods
This is where consultation matters.
A client who frequently wears high ponytails or trains regularly may benefit from the movement and placement flexibility available with Nano Tips or Keratin Bonds.
A client who predominantly wears their hair down may be an excellent candidate for Tapes.
For a client requiring significant volume, Tapes or a Weft may offer advantages because of the way the hair and weight are distributed.
And you don't necessarily need to choose only one method. Experienced extensionists can combine methods when appropriate to create the best placement, concealment and result for the client.
Maintenance matters just as much as installation
Nano Tip extensions grow down with the client's natural hair and require professional maintenance and repositioning.
Clients should also be educated on correct home care from the beginning. Regular brushing, correct washing and drying, protecting attachment points and using extension-appropriate products all contribute to how the hair performs between appointments.
Maintenance shouldn't be an afterthought discussed when the client leaves the salon. It should form part of the original consultation.
Colour matching Nano Tip extensions
A seamless extension result starts with the right colour — and that doesn't always mean matching the hair at the root.
For a Platinum Lockz colour-match recommendation, send us at least three clear photos of the client's clean, dry hair.
Natural outdoor light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight and fluorescent or heavily artificial lighting where possible.
For a single colour, we generally focus on the ends because they may be lighter than the root due to fading.
For balayage, both the root and ends need to be considered.
For foiled hair, we're looking at the foils and overall blend to determine the most suitable extension combination.
